Crews were on the scene of a large structure fire on the east side of I-25 Saturday afternoon. According to the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD), crews were dispatched to the 3100 block of Century Street around 2:43 p.m. A CSFD engine was in the area and immediately called for a structure fire response after seeing heavy black smoke. Dispatch also reportedly received around 58 calls regarding the fire.
According to CSFD, the structure appears to be a storage area, and styrofoam and other building materials were on fire. Firefighters eventually ordered a second alarm due to the amount of fire and the resources needed on the scene.
Crews initially had issues gaining access to the fire because the building was fenced in, but the bulk of the fire has been knocked down. Crews have stopped operations to watch fire behavior, search for hotspots, and plan next steps. Crews are also waiting for heavy equipment to go through the scene to pick up any burned material.
Hazmat crews are on the scene monitoring air quality and protecting waterways. No injuries were reported, and no nearby buildings were damaged, according to the fire department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
