Phragmites catch fire in Ogden melting siding of nearby home

Share

The exterior of a home was melted after a hot blaze ignited in an Ogden neighborhood on Saturday night. The fire ignited in the phragmites near a retention pond on the 400 N block of Jefferson Ave, according to Chief Matthew Hess with the Ogden City Fire Department.

Crews arrived at the scene, finding a large blaze in the weeds near the pond. Officials said the phragmites were about 15 feet tall and burned extremely hot, melting the siding of a nearby home. The fire was caught on camera, with video and photos showing a large fire with a dark pillar of smoke extending upward.

Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the home or any nearby structures. There was no other damage to the home and the residents were not displaced from the incident. While the cause of the fire is under investigation, Chief Hess said there were reports of juveniles running from the area.
