Pursuit suspect jumps out of car, sets it on fire in northeast Los Angeles

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A police chase in northeast Los Angeles ended with a vehicle on fire and a search for the suspect driver on Friday morning, according to officials.

It was unclear what the motorist was wanted for, but preliminary reports indicated the vehicle may have been stolen or abandoned when the suspect took it out of Monrovia.

Officials with the Pasadena Police Department told KTLA’s Mike Case that the suspect drove the vehicle onto the northbound 110 Freeway before exiting near Avenue 52 in the Mount Washington area.

The driver then allegedly steered the car into a wash or tunnel area off the freeway, jumped out and set the vehicle on fire before fleeing on foot.

Sky5 was overhead as black smoke poured from the tunnel and drifted into surrounding hillside neighborhoods. KTLA’s Case reported that the pursuit lasted only a few minutes and involved Monrovia police, Pasadena police and the California Highway Patrol before coming to a sudden end near the freeway.

Firefighters with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to extinguish the blaze, which appeared contained to the vehicle. No injuries were immediately reported, and authorities did not indicate any immediate impacts to freeway traffic.
