Tucson city manager publishes recommended budget; fire stations not included in cuts

VIDEO: The city of Tucson has been facing a $17 million deficit for the 2027 fiscal year. City manager Tim Thomure has closed that gap with an official recommended budget adjustment that will be presented to the mayor and council on Tuesday, April 21.

Noticeably absent from the recommended budget was the closing of fire stations 3 and 6, a possibility that received heavy pushback from local firefighters, who feared the closures would increase response times.

While there are still recommended cuts to the fire department, the stations will remain untouched. “We’re pretty confident that we could still deliver those services without shutting down those fire stations,” Thomure said on Friday.

Thomure said the decision to keep the fire stations off his recommendation was from feedback the mayor and council provided during an April 7 study session.

“I think we were able to deliver the mayor and council the budget that certainly adhered to their policy direction and still is fiscally responsible,” Thomure said.

The mayor and council also had a motion to ensure pool hours, which were also presented as an option, weren’t a part of the budget cuts.
