Newark firefighter suffers burns to face during apartment fire

NEWARK, N.J. — Two people were hospitalized Monday, including a firefighter who suffered burns while fighting an early-morning blaze in Newark, officials said.

Newark firefighters responded to 319 Hawthorne Avenue at 3:59 a.m. for a report of a fire and rescued an unresponsive man from a first-floor apartment, officials said.

The man was taken to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in critical condition, officials said.

One firefighter was also taken to an area hospital to be treated for burns on his hands, wrists and face, officials said. The firefighter is in stable condition, according to officials.

The fire was under control by 4:18 a.m. Two residents who were displaced had been relocated.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Newark Public Safety Department’s Arson Unit, officials said.
