Kansas City Fire Department crews responded to two fires overnight Tuesday, rescuing three people from a basement apartment in one blaze and then battling a house fire in a remote area where getting water to the scene was difficult.
The first fire was reported about 10 p.m. in the 800 block of Park Avenue. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from a two-story apartment building and moved in to attack the fire with several hose lines. Crews rescued three people from a basement apartment. One person was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.
During the operation, a Mayday was called after a firefighter fell through the first floor into the basement. The firefighter was able to get out without injury, the department said. Firefighters searched the building and cleared it. The fire was brought under control, and crews remained on scene putting out hot spots.
