Advance Fair Access for Special Districts

Share

Alongside our partners at the IAFCWFCA strongly supports the Spring Call to Action: To Help Advance Fair Access for Special Districts in support of all Special Districts across the United States – we are stronger together. Momentum continues to build for the Special District Fairness and Accessibility Act (H.R. 2766 / S. 2014)—and now is the time to act.

This bipartisan legislation would establish the first-ever federal definition of “special district” in U.S. Code, removing long-standing barriers that prevent special districts from fully accessing federal programs. Despite delivering essential services—special districts are too often excluded simply because federal law does not clearly recognize them.  Thanks to strong early leadership, the bill already has bipartisan cosponsors in both chambers. But additional cosponsors are critical to move this legislation forward.

Take Action Today — Two Simple Steps – Personal outreach from local leaders makes a powerful difference.

  1. Sign on to the Support Letter – Add your organization’s voice by signing NSDA’s support letter here: https://www.nationalspecialdistricts.org/support-our-efforts-to-pass-h-r-2766-s-2014
  2. Make It Personal: Contact Your Congressional Offices: This winter, we encourage you to reach out directly to your U.S. Representative and Senators:
  3. Call or email their district office
  4. Request support and co-sponsorship of H.R. 2766 / S. 2014
  5. Invite them to visit your fire district, tour a facility, or attend an upcoming event

Why This Matters – Passing this legislation will:

  • Formally recognize special districts as units of local government
  • Improve fair access to federal programs and assistance
  • Strengthen local control, accountability, and community-driven solutions
  • Support resilient infrastructure, public safety, and essential services nationwide

Special districts are the purest expression of local control—created by communities, governed locally, and focused on delivering results. With your help, Congress can ensure federal policy finally reflects that reality.

Join NSDA in championing fairness, clarity, and opportunity for special districts.  Let’s make this winter a turning point.
