A firefighter and a resident were taken to a hospital for evaluation after an Ansonia house fire Monday night, according to the city’s fire department. Five firefighters were trapped while battling the house fire on South Cliff Street but are now all accounted for, Fire Chief Jay Fainer said.
Ansonia firefighters went to the fire at 5:30 p.m. after receiving an initial report of people possibly trapped inside. Arriving crews found heavy fire on the second floor on the right side and brought it under control at 7:24 p.m. None of the residents were found trapped inside, but they rescued one dog from the third floor.
Fainer estimated between six and nine people were displaced from the fire. The Red Cross was called to assist those removed from the home. Firefighters were met with cold weather during their response, which froze the driveway into a “sheet of ice,” Fainer said. The fire department had to call in more firefighters due to the temperatures and requested a bus to help keep them warm.
Ansonia firefighters received help from Derby, Oxford, Shelton and Seymour. The conditions of the firefighter and resident who were taken to the hospital are believed to be non-life-threatening.
