The Fort Smith Fire Department (FSFD) confirmed a cleanup operation was underway after containing a chemical spill near U.S. Highway 271 on Saturday.

FSFD said a hazardous materials incident occurred Saturday, releasing nearly 125,000 gallons of sulfuric acid near 7000 Hwy 271. Emergency crews responded to the scene, identified the incident, and called in specialized HazMat teams.

HazMat teams contained the leak after assessing the situation upon arrival. According to the fire department, responding crews began “neutralization efforts” by using sodium bicarbonate to stabilize the chemical spill and reduce potential hazards.

External contractors specializing in containment and environmental cleanup were en route to help safely collect, remove, and dispose of the material, the FSFD said.

Fire authorities noted there have been no confirmed reports of injuries, and air monitoring and environmental assessments were underway to ensure the safety of nearby residents and responders.

The Fort Smith Fire Department advised the public to avoid the immediate area while operations were ongoing.
