The Colorado Springs Fire Department is on the scene of two grass fires that started in Palmer Park early on Wednesday morning, around 5:00 a.m. According to crews on scene, the fires were burning roughly 100 square feet inside the park. The department said there are several spot fires around the area.

In an update at 6:00 a.m., crews on scene said the fires in total were a quarter of an acre in size and that they had established a containment line around the fires burning in the area. According to the department, Palmer Park will remain closed for several hours on Wednesday while crews investigate this fire.

In an update, the Colorado Springs Police Department said that while responding to the fire, a CSFD drone operator noticed a suspicious person standing near a rock formation watching their efforts. CSFD informed the police, who were able to contact the woman identified as Cadence Malkin, 21.

Malkin allegedly told the police that she had started the fires in the area. Malkin was taken into custody by officers for further investigation. With red-flag conditions across the state today, the department said this is a good reminder that weather conditions will lead to fire spreading rapidly. The fires were located burning near parking lot 12.
