Share

The Kahuku High School girls’ flag football team escaped a raging bus fire on the H-3 Freeway Thursday night. The fire was reported shortly before 8:30 p.m. School principal Walter Santiago confirmed the team was on the bus, and the coaches and players got off safely with no injuries.

Santiago told Hawaii News Now that a coach smelled something burning, possibly a tire. Sources told HNN the bus driver said the bus had been recently worked on. The driver then pulled over on the Kaneohe-bound side near the tunnel, and everyone piled out. The coaches and players lost everything inside.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation said the fire was on the Haiku side of the tunnels in the Kaneohe-bound lanes. The Honolulu Police Department said officers co-responded with the Honolulu Fire Department to reports of a school bus on fire near the Tetsuo Harano Tunnel and assisted with traffic control in the area.
