Two people were killed in separate apartment fires in Vermont over the weekend. The first fire occurred on Saturday night into Sunday morning in Barre Town, WPTZ reported. Fire officials said the first calls came in shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, with neighbors reporting sounds of an explosion at an address on Mill Street.
The location of the fire was an old warehouse with one apartment inside. Officials said they were informed shortly after arriving that someone was inside, and fire crews moved quickly to search the building once the conditions allowed.
Firefighters found the body of 69-year-old Christopher Florucci inside the apartment where he lived. Officials said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of his death.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The second fire was reported around 6:20 p.m. Sunday by a neighbor who saw smoke coming from a unit in an apartment complex at Lyman Meadow, state police said. Firefighters encountered moderate fire and smoke conditions and after getting the fire under control, found a woman dead inside the apartment.
