Small earthquake was recorded near Butte

VIDEO/PHOTOS: According to preliminary data, the quake had a magnitude of 2.9 and occurred at approximately 9:32 p.m. Sunday. The epicenter was located about 11 miles east of Butte at 45.985N, 112.314W, with a depth of approximately 12.7 kilometers.

At this magnitude, the earthquake is considered minor. Shaking may have been lightly felt in areas close to the epicenter, but damage is not expected. Montana does experience occasional small earthquakes, particularly in the western part of the state, which lies within a region of ongoing geological activity.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage associated with this event. Residents who felt shaking are encouraged to report their experience to help scientists better understand how the quake was perceived across the area.
