Rain, strong winds and critical fire weather risk Wednesday; Red Flag, High Wind Warnings

Share

Moisture from a brief atmospheric river is moving into areas west of the divide today, bringing widespread precipitation. Higher elevations along the Montana/Idaho border could see between a half inch and an inch and a half of liquid, with the heaviest totals expected in northwest Montana.

Snow levels have risen quickly, keeping most precipitation as rain even above 7,000 feet through tonight. While main rivers should remain below action stage, creeks in Lincoln, Sanders, and Mineral counties will see further rises, but overall flooding concern are minor. Rockslides remain a possibility.

A strong cold front arrives Wednesday morning, bringing rapidly changing conditions. Snow levels will drop across northwest Montana by Wednesday afternoon, while areas farther south and east briefly see rising snow levels before colder air takes over Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
