Fire crews made significant progress Thursday on the Panama Fire in Jefferson County, increasing containment to 25% despite difficult weather conditions, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Updated mapping shows the fire has burned 598 acres as of Thursday evening. Officials say there are currently no structures threatened, thanks to successful suppression efforts throughout the day.
A total of 51 personnel responded to the fire Thursday, including aerial resources used to assist ground crews in containing the blaze.
Firefighters faced strong afternoon winds but were still able to strengthen containment lines. Weather conditions are expected to remain challenging, with forecasts calling for continued strong winds, warm temperatures, and low relative humidity.
Relief may be on the way, however, as moderating conditions are expected to arrive Saturday.
