New York State Police Report 30-Car Pileup on I-81 Near Syracuse

On Thursday January 15, at about 2:20 p.m., New York State Police responded to a report of a multi-vehicle crash on I-81 southbound, south of Exit 73 in the town of LaFayette, a rural community about 15 moles south of Syracuse.

Police reported that a total of 37 vehicles were involved in the crash on the road. The primary crash involved approximately 18 vehicles, including three tractor-trailers.

The crash is considered weather-related as the area that was experiencing heavy snow.

No deaths were reported. Four patients were transported to Upstate Medical Hospital, three to Crouse Hospital, and one to Upstate Community Hospital, according to police. Two patients were reported to have serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Interstate 81 was closed for several hours but reopened in both northbound and southbound direction by 5:37 p.m.
