VIDEO: Livingston Fire and Rescue is taking proactive steps to protect its firefighters by investing in safer equipment and reducing chemical risks.
The department made a significant change four years ago by moving away from foam containing PFAS chemicals.
Instead, they switched to MicroBlaze, a safer alternative that helps lower exposure to harmful substances.
PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” can accumulate in the body and have been linked to cancer risk.
In addition to this shift, Livingston Fire and Rescue began replacing older gear with new black gear three years ago. This new gear limits direct contact with harmful chemicals.
The crews receive about five to six new sets each year, using fabric that can be PFAS-free while still providing protection against heat and impact.
