Kaua‘i firefighters airlift elderly visitor after 30-foot fall on Kuilau Trail

A crew from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued an injured 76-year-old man visiting from California from the Kuilau Trail in Wailua on Wednesday.

According to a preliminary report, first responders received a report of an injured hiker shortly before 11:45 a.m. who had fallen approximately 30 feet from the Kuilau Trail.

Personnel with Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded to the incident.

First responders arrived on the scene and discovered the injured hiker approximately two miles into the trail, holding on to vegetation on the cliffside to avoid falling further.

The hiker was extracted using an Arial Rescue Vest (ARV) and short hauled to the Loop Road landing zone.

Upon landing at the Loop Road landing zone, the hiker was transferred to American Medical Response for further medical care.

The scene was cleared shortly after 12:50 p.m.
