TRIBUNE, Kan. — A Greeley County volunteer firefighter died after suffering a medical emergency during training, according to a post from the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office on Facebook.

Carl “Levi” Evans, a firefighter with Greeley County, died April 8, the agency said. Evans had also previously served as a deputy sheriff, according to a press release from Gov. Laura Kelly’s office.

In response to Evans’ death, Kelly ordered flags across Kansas to fly at half-staff on April 16.

“From his time serving in the sheriff’s office to his commitment as a volunteer firefighter, Levi Evans was dedicated to protecting his community,” Kelly said. “The loss of a first responder is always a tragedy. My thoughts go out to Levi’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”

Officials did not release details about the training Evans was participating in or the cause of the medical emergency.
