Honolulu Fire Department: Kapolei house fire started by BBQ grill embers

Share

A Kapolei house caught on fire after high winds carried embers from a barbecue grill into flammable material. Even though temperatures are increasing, windy conditions persist, and the Honolulu Fire Department wants to make sure your meal does not cause a dangerous situation.

Recently, three residents were safely evacuated from the Pakaweli Street home just after noon on March 30, HFD reported. High winds blew embers from an unattended grill into the front patio and set several wicker furniture items on fire, officials said.

The incident was deemed accidental by an HFD Fire Investigator a day later. HFD estimated the total loss at $163,000, with property damage of $160,000 and the other $3,000 for damaged items. Officials are reminding the public to be careful when using a barbecue grill.
