An EMT with the Guymon Fire Department died after crews had to pull him from his home that caught fire early Friday in the Oklahoma Panhandle.

Around 5:15 a.m., crews from the Guymon, Goodwell, and Texhoma fire departments responded to a report of a fire at a home on Aggie Avenue in Goodwell. When firefighters arrived, authorities said they saw heavy fire and smoke coming from the front door and windows.

Goodwell firefighters went into the home through a bedroom window and rescued someone, according to a news release. Guymon paramedics started life-saving efforts, and the person was taken to an area hospital.

The Guymon Fire Department said the victim was later pronounced dead. He was identified as 49-year-old Steven Coen, who served as an EMT with the Guymon Fire Department for 10 years.

“This is a huge loss for our Department, Community, and Area,” Guymon Fire Chief Grant Wadley said in the news release.

Coen was scheduled to work EMS details at the Pioneer Rodeo Days this weekend. Authorities said he also served as an EMT in Hooker, covering calls and allowing their members time off as needed. The circumstances surrounding the fire are under investigation.
