PHOTOS: Construction is currently underway for a new U.S. Forest Service Fire Station in Chico, located off Skyway. Officials broke ground on the project in August 2024, following facility loss caused by the 2020 North Complex Fire.

“We’ve essentially given ourselves the foundations for the project, and now our next phase is to go vertical,” said Justine Zeni, Facilities Engineer for the Plumas National Forest. Forest Service officials provided KRCR with a tour of the site on Thursday. Since breaking ground in 2024, crews have completed significant work on the project, including site grading, underground utility installation and more.

The next phase involves completing the walls, roofs, and ceilings, bringing the community one step closer to having a firefighting resource available. The new fire station will accommodate the Feather River Interagency Hotshot Crew and one of the two engines from the Plumas National Forest Feather River Ranger District.
