A fallen Conway firefighter was remembered Friday on the 10-year anniversary of his death.

“Today marks 10 years since the line of duty death of Firefighter Christopher Gene Ray,” the Conway Fire Department said in a Facebook post.

“As 3:30 p.m. approaches, the exact time of his passing, we ask the Conway community to join us and pause in remembrance of Chris. Please keep Chris’ family, our fire personnel, and the community affected by this loss in your thoughts. Ten years later, we still honor his service, remember his sacrifice, and carry his legacy with us.”

Ray died on March 20, 2016, when the South Carolina Highway Patrol said he fell off a fire engine and was hit when it reversed over him.

Ray was a six-year veteran of the Conway Fire Department and also had seven years of experience as a volunteer with Horry County Fire Rescue.

Conway’s fire chief at the time, Le Hendrick, called Ray’s death a “tragic accident.” Tributes poured in over social media in days after following his death.
