A distracted driver’s car caught fire after he got into a crash at the intersection of Mall Drive and Riverside Drive in St. George.

The St. George Police Department said the driver of a Hyundai, who has not been identified, was heading northbound on Mall Drive when he took a moment to look at his phone. “When he looked back up, he realized there was a Mazda stopped at the intersection,” St. George PD said in a statement. “He was unable to stop and rear-ended the Mazda.”

The Hyundai reportedly caught fire upon impact. The St. George Police Department said there were no injuries as a result of the crash, but the Hyundai driver was cited for careless driving.

The police department said this crash serves as an example of why it’s important to stay off the phone while driving, adding, “Drive smart. Drive safe.”
