Deadly blaze at Relax Inn under investigation in Cottage Grove

One person died in a fire at the Relax Inn early Thursday morning, according to the Cottage Grove Police Department. CGPD officials said officers were on patrol in the 1200 block of North Highway 99 just after 2:30 a.m. when they saw flames and smoke coming from the motel at 1030 North Highway 99.

Officers immediately called South Lane 9-1-1 and rushed to the scene to help people staying at the motel get out of their rooms. South Lane Fire and Rescue arrived and put out the fire. One person was found dead in a room that was heavily damaged by the fire. Three other people from a room next door were able to escape. They were taken to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with unknown injuries. No other injuries were reported.
