Child hospitalized after fire breaks out, leaves family homeless in Island Lake

Share

A child was transported to the hospital in unknown condition after a fire broke out overnight at a house and left the residents homeless in Island Lake Wednesday morning. The Wauconda Fire District responded around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday to the 3000 block of Brierhill Drive in Island Lake for a report of a structure fire. Wauconda Fire District Battalion Chief Scott Schrayer said an adult male and a child were home at the time.

They were alerted to the fire by smelling smoke and hearing an alarming smoke detector. Firefighters arrived within four minutes and found an active fire in a basement bedroom of a single-family, two-story house, Schrayer said.

The fire was extinguished in approximately 15 minutes. The residence was deemed uninhabitable due to fire and smoke damage throughout the home, Schrayer said.
