‘A pretty amazing feeling’: Kodiak Island residents come together to help extinguish shed fire

Share

VIDEO: A family on Kodiak Island lost their generator shed to a fire, but were able to avoid losing their house due to the quick actions of the community.

Alexandria Daugherty said her family lost power due to the high winds in Chiniak — located roughly 41 miles by road from the city of Kodiak — Thursday evening. To keep their pipes from freezing, they started their generator the next morning.

“We went outside about an hour after we started it and looked over and there was about a 10-foot flame coming from our generator shed,” Daugherty said. “At that point, of course, panic struck.”

Daugherty and her husband tried to hook up their hose to extinguish the fire, but couldn’t get any water. She then got the idea to send a text to a mom group chat she’s in, and in no later than 10 minutes, help arrived.
