BERKS COUNTY, Pa. — Two Berks County firefighters were killed in a hit-and-run crash while riding on a UTV during a search for a missing woman on April 4.
Fleetwood police told WFMZ that firefighters from several fire departments, as well as Berks Search and Rescue crews, responded around 5:57 p.m. to search for a missing 60-year-old woman near Kutztown Road in Richmond Township, just north of Route 662.
The firefighters, identified as Walnuttown Fire Chief Jeff Buck and Assistant Fire Chief Rob Shick in a social media post by the department, were in a UTV traveling on the shoulder of Kutztown Road when a southbound Toyota Camry approached. Witnesses told investigators the car was swerving before it left the roadway and struck the UTV head-on, NBC Philadelphia reported.
Police said that after the crash, the driver and passenger in the Camry fled the scene. They were apprehended on Krause Road, not far from the crash.
WOLF reported Buck was pronounced dead at Lehigh Valley Hospital, while Shick died at Reading Hospital.
Police said the crash investigation is ongoing.
