VIDEOS: Firefighters had to act fast to prevent a wildfire from ripping through homes on the edge of a small town in southwestern Minnesota on Saturday. Teresa Jorgensen said her home and others nearby were spared by the heroic actions of firefighters as the fast-spreading fire tore down the Buffalo Ridge and nearly engulfed a row of homes in Lake Benton, which has a population of roughly 700 people in Lincoln County.
“Huge Thank You to the Lake Benton and area (Tyler, Elkton, Ivanhoe, Holland, Arco, and more I’m sure) Fire Departments (and support by EMTs, Sheriffs/officers, etc.) for their amazing work today in containing the fire here in Lake Benton!!” Jorgensen posted on Facebook, alongside doorbell camera footage of the fire.
“It was terrifying to watch a fire come so close to our home and other neighbors along the ridge here in Lake Benton,” Jorgensen said. “We feel so blessed to have so many devoted people serving our communities!! Thank you!!!!” Garrett Peterson, a member of the Lake Benton Fire Department, said Jorgensen’s video “shows how lucky we all were.”
“No homes were damaged as far as we know,” Peterson said, noting that one firefighter suffered minor burns, and a fire truck “had a rough encounter with a tree.” “Could have been much worse,” Peterson added. The Lake Benton Fire Department issued a post of gratitude for all of the neighboring fire crews that helped.
