30 fire trucks battle freezing blaze at Jefferson County lumber yard

Share

VIDEO: A massive fire destroyed a lumber and steel company in Jefferson County, requiring dozens of fire trucks and crews to battle flames in freezing temperatures overnight. The fire erupted around midnight at AJ Anich Lumber – Pal Steel Company on 3rd Street near Highway 59 in Palmyra. An off-duty officer first noticed smoke coming from the lumber yard and called emergency services.

First responders initially believed they were responding to a shed fire, but upon arrival discovered the entire lumber yard facility was engulfed in flames. The freezing cold temperatures forced firefighters to upgrade the response to a four-alarm fire, bringing in 30 fire trucks from Dane, Jefferson, Waukesha and Rome counties to assist. Crews battled the massive flames for hours overnight.

“We had multiple departments respond to help us out,” said Dylan Callas, deputy chief of the Palmyra Fire Department. “The cold weather definitely made things more challenging for our crews, but everyone worked together effectively.”
