VIDEO/PHOTOS: A meat processing plant in Provo was destroyed after a large commercial fire early Tuesday morning. Capt. Jeanie Atherton with the Provo Fire Department said multiple agencies responded to a fire at Ford’s Meat Locker near 800 North and 500 West just before midnight on Dec. 15.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly, but have worked throughout the night and into the morning putting out hotspots in the debris. It is unclear if the neighboring business, Nova Ink, was damaged in the fire and if so, to what extent. Atherton said an investigation into what started the fire is underway; However, investigators have been unable to enter the building due to the remaining hotspots.
There were no injuries reported. While fighting the flames, the intersection of 800 North and 500 West was closed but has since reopened. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Ford’s Meat Locker, first opened in 1944, is known for processing wild game meat for hunters, pet owners and families, according to the company’s website. The family-owned business uses hunted meat to make beef jerky, summer sausages, dog treats and raw dog food.
