One person was hospitalized, and the residents of the Draper Rehabilitation and Care Center were evacuated after a fire started at the center.

Captain Brian Garn with the Draper City Fire Department said firefighters responded to the scene near 12700 South and Fort Street on Wednesday, shortly after 1 p.m.

By the time crews arrived, the building’s sprinkler system had extinguished the flames, leaving only light smoke in the hallway.

As a precaution, roughly 64 residents, most of whom are wheelchair bound and over the age of 60, were evacuated from the building. They were taken to Draper Elementary for shelter until firefighters provide the all-clear for residents to move back in.

One resident was taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution due to a pre-existing medical condition, according to Captain Garn.
