Firefighters were working at an abandoned mill in Haverhill where a fire broke out and involved much of the vacant building. The mill building is in the area of Winter Street and Stevens Street, just west of Haverhill’s downtown neighborhood.
Haverhill Fire Chief Chris Cesati said that the building was “pretty well involved” when crews arrived on scene, and several other communities provided aid, including Georgetown, Groveland, Lawrence and Methuen.
A separate section of the mill caught fire back in 2015, and the chief said they developed a plan at that time which they put into place during this latest fire. He said it is a concern to have abandoned buildings like this in the city.
By Tuesday morning, the fire had been largely knocked down, and crews were working to protect hot spots. Cesati said he did not believe there was anyone in the building when the fire broke out.
